Kalka --- Kalka railway station is located at an altitude of 658 meters (2,159 ft) above mean sea level. In 1864, the first train rolled into Delhi Junction (DLI) as a Calcutta - Delhi line was completed via Allahabad by EIR after 9 years of construction. In 1866 a regular train service was started from Calcutta to Delhi, which later became today's Howrah - Kalka Mail. It is the oldest regular passenger train service of India. The service later extended to Kalka in 1891. Both the terminal stations had internal carriageway for the cars of Viceroy and other high-ranking officers to reach next to their rail coach, The carriageway at Howrah is still used & runs between platforms 8 & 9, but the carriageway at Kalka has been converted into a platform. The railway was constructed on a 2' gauge by the Delhi-Ambala-Kalka Railway Company commencing in 1898. Today under the jurisdiction of Ambala railway division Kalka has a narrow gauge diesel shed for the maintenance of ZDM-3 and ZDM-5 narrow gauge diesel locos. Station Code - KLK.
