Leaving New Jalpaiguri station the train passes through the outskirts of Siliguri town and reaches Siliguri station (399 ft). This station was opened in 1949. It once used to be the departure station for all trains leaving for the north eastern states of India. It is the only station in India which has tracks of all three gauges. After a short halt the train leaves Siliguri station and crosses the Mahanadi bridge over the Mahanadi river which flows from the Himalayan foothills.
