DHR Rakes Waiting for Re-openning of the NJP-Darjeeling full lenth route
On 16th June 2010, a major landslide occurred at 14 mile on NH 55 near Pagla Jhora between Gayabari and Kurseong. Meanwhile the Toy Train services were also affected between NJP to Kurseong since a lot of boulders have fallen on the tracks and also cracks have appeared at several places underneath the rail tracks. The landslide had swept away around 500 meters of the road and the toy train tracks running parallel to it. Following the landslide, the direct connectivity between Siliguri to Darjeeling along the NH55 has been lost.
DHR faces another jolt again. Further damage was caused by the severe earthquake on 18th September 2011.
Again on 28th September 2011 monsoon rains wreck the Pagla Jhora repair work. At Tindharia there was a severe landslide where a 150m stretch of NH55 and the DHR track was destroyed. The DHR is now cut in two places. Already isolated from the upper section, the DHR workshops are now also isolated from the lower section.
Unfortunately, on 19th-20th July 2012, a further land slip at Tindharia causes more damage, including to the workshop, during a heavy monsoon rainstorm and has removed both a substantial section of track and started to damage the walls of the shed. A major part of it gave way in which around 28 wheels of the Darjeeling toy train and other equipment of the workshop were damaged.
In May 2013, work starts on a temporary rail diversion at Tindharia and by the year-end it was almost complete. Work continues on repairs near Pagla Jhora but still with no clear dates as to when the line will re-open there.
In Dec 2014, North-east Frontier Railway announces in a press release that the restoration work on all the damaged stretches were finished & a trial run was also conducted after completion of the work and have found things to be satisfactory. So the toy train is ready to resume its journey from NewJalpaiguri and move uphill till Darjeeling from December 25. But later it got postponed as NFR wanted some more trial runs on the effected stretch to ensure passenger safety.
