WAM4 Class Locomotives & Variants
The Loco Story :
Built by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works first in 1971.
Maximum speed limit - 110 kmph. Max power output - 3850 hp.
These locos feature rheostatic braking & MU capability. Being designed specially for mixed traffic these locos has rendered excellent service.
WAM4 class & its variants are undoubtedly the most favoured, successful & trusted AC locmotive class in Indian conditions till date with minimal & simple maintenance.
A single WAM4 can haul a 24-coach train at a maximum speed of 110 km/h. and an average speed of around 70 km/h.
They use the same Alco asymmetric trimount bogies as the successful WDM2 diesel class.
Air brakes for loco and vacuum train brakes fitted as original equipment along with rheostatic braking.
Speed control by three series-parallel motor combinations and weak field operation.
Auxiliaries from Westinghouse and Kirloskar compressors, S F India blowers, Northey exhauster.
WAM4P variants are intended for passenger operations allowing parallel operation of some or all traction motors.
WAM4PD variants are fitted with dual braking system.
WAM-4E variants are fitted only with air-brake.
