XGM-911 --- One of the heaviest broad gauge locomotives, built by Bayer Peacock & Co. Manchester, UK, in 1928 as XG class and was imported in 1936 by the North Western Railway. With 0-8-0 (Decapods) wheel arrangement this massive 161 ton locomotive is built with inside plate frames i.e. the frames are situated within the wheels and is equipped with two 23.5" x 28" cylinders, 'Walschaerts' valve gear and three 'Rosspop' type safety valve. It is one of the biggest Non-Articulated type of locomotive where the engine units are attached to the main frame. In 1943 it was modified to 2-8-2 (Mikados) wheel configuration to reduce axel load, at the Mughaplura Workshops of the NWR (now in Pakistan) and re-classified as XG/M. Later it was transfered to Eastern Punjab Railway and used for hump-yard shunting. Only three such XG class were ever built, of which this one is preserved & now resting at National Railway Museum, New Delhi. Photographed by Rudranil RoyChowdhury. D.O.P. - 19th September 2018.
