XE-3634 'Angadh' --- Built in the year 1931 at The Vulcan Foundry Limited of Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England this steamer is the only surviving broad-gauge X class locomotive in India. This massive 198 ton locomotive with 2-8-2 'Mikado' wheel arrangement measures about 15 feet and is one of the heaviest class amongst all steam locomotives of its time to haul a train. With a tractive effort of 24 tons & capable of doing around 50 kmph, this loco was usually used for heavy freight duties during its heydays. About 93 of the X class locomotives were built till 1946, of which 35 was given to Pakistan and 58 were retained in India during the partition.
After it was decommissioned by Indian Railways, the loco was owned and operated by the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board, in their Thermal Power Plant at Korba. Later following the end of its codal life, it was gifted back to IR. The loco received a complete rehabilitation in Amritsar Railway Workshop in 2013 before being re-introduced onto regular service. It is christened as 'Angadh' after the legendary mythological figure of Ramayana. It is now stationed, in full working condition, at the Rewari Steam Loco Shed. Photographed by Somsubhra Das.
