MAWD-1798 --- Metre-gauge American War Disposal steam locomotive # 1798 was built in 1942 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, USA. It was popularly known as a 'MacArthur', after the famous American World War II general. Wheel configuration 2-8-2 (Pony Couple Radial). These were especially suited for shunting duties. They were not permitted to run at high velocities because their bogie tenders could derail at such speed. With their stovepipe chimneys, bar frames and central headlamps, they were typical American locomotives. This loco was put in service in 1948. The last passenger service was run by this locomotive in Alipurduar-Gitaldah section in 1993. After dieselisation it was lying defunct & condemned in New Guwahati Loco Shed. Later it was restored & recommissioned for a few Steam Heritage runs on selected MG sections to promote rail tourism in scenic areas of N.F. Railway. Currently plinthed outside New Jalpaiguri Junction. Photo taken by Somsubhra Das. D.O.P. - 2nd October 2014.
