Visakhapatnam --- The station serves Visakhapatnam/Vizag/Waltair - the largest city of Andhra Pradesh both in terms of area and population, nestled between the Eastern Ghats mountain range and the Bay of Bengal and is often known as 'The Jewel of the East Coast'. Visakhapatnam's history stretches back to the 6th century BC. Historically, it was considered part of the Kalinga region and later ruled by the Vengi kingdom, the Pallava and Eastern Ganga dynasties. Archaeological records suggest that the present city was built around the 11th and 12th centuries with control over the city fluctuating between the Chola Dynasty and the Gajapati Kingdom until its conquest by the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century. Conquered by the Mughals in the 16th century & eventually control passed to the British in 1804 and remained till the independence. After independence, Visakhapatnam developed into one of the country's chief ports and became the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. During 1893-1896, the 1,287 km (800 mi) long tracks covering the entire coastal stretch from Cuttack to Vijayawada, was built and opened to traffic by Bengal Nagpur Railway which was later renamed as South Eastern Railway. Presently Visakhapatnam Railway Station is a major railway station located on the Howrah-Chennai main line & is under control of East Coast Railways. The station is a terminal station - trains must go back the same way as they come. Currently the station have 8 plaforms and stoppage for 135 trains. Nearly 50 trains originates/terminates at this station. The station have both Eletric & Diesel Locomotive shed. The ELS currently holds 108 nos. of WAG5 class locos, 33 nos. of WAG7 class locos, 18 nos. of WAP4 class locos, 16 nos. of WAG9 class locos & 15 nos. of WAM4 class locos. Apart from these, VSKP is the only ELS in India which holds WAG6 class locomotives. It currently holds 11 such locos. The DLS currently possesses 130 nos. WDG3A class locos, nearly 15 nos. WDM2 class locos, about 50 nos. WDM3A class locos, about 11 nos. of WDS6 class shunters & 31 nos. WDG4 class EMD locos. Station code - VSKP.
