Tiruchchirapalli --- The Great Southern Railway of India, a Railway Company was established in 1853 with Tiruchchirappalli as its headquarters. In 1859, the company constructed its first railway line that connected Tiruchchirappalli with Nagapattinam. Presently, Tiruchchirappalli is an important railway junction in Tamil Nadu and is a division of the Southern Railway. It is the second biggest and busiest railway junctions in Southern Railway zone. Five branch lines separates from Trichy - Towards north for Chennai, Tirupati, Nellore, etc. - Towards east for Thanjavur, Velankanni, Nagore, etc. - Towards south-east for Pudukkottai, Karaikudi, Manamadurai, Rameswaram etc. - Towards south for Madurai, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Thiruvananthapuram, etc. - Towards west for Karur, Erode, Coimbatore, Palakkad Jn. etc. The station have 8 platforms with stoppage for 82 trains.
