The Lucknow 'Charbagh' Railway Station --- It is the main railway station of Lucknow, situated in the south of the city. Charbagh Railway Station was built in 1914 and incorporates the Awadhi and Mughal architecture. It is one of the most beautifully built Railway Stations in the world. The words 'Char Bagh' refer to the four gardens which existed here earlier. Charbagh Station, the major railway station of Lucknow, is an architectural masterpiece. The ostentatious structural design of Charbagh Railway Station enthrals a tourist at the onset. Built at a whooping price of Rs. 70 lakhs, it was designed by J.H. Hornimen. The foundation of the Charbagh Railway Station was place by the Bishop, in March 1914. The present Station building was constructed in 1926 with domes and minars of Saracan design, intended to harmonise with the architecture peculiar to the important historical buildings to the city which date to the days of the Nawabs of Oudh. The building constructed in red brick has a frontage of long verandahs adorned with Mughal arches. In 1867, Lucknow-Kanpur section was opened for traffic as a part of the Oudh-Rohilkhand Railway. In 1925 Lucknow beacome part of East Indian Railway which remained till 1952 before amalgamation with Indian Railways. The Charbagh station have 9 platforms. Around 225 trains have stoppage in Lucknow & about 40 trains originates/terminates at this station. Lucknow has a Diesel Locomotive Shed which houses both ALCo & EMD locos. The DLS currently holds around 18 nos. of WDG3A class locos, 30+ nos. of WDM2 class & variants, 45 nos. of WDM-3A class locos & 50+ nos. of WDM3D class locomotives. Apart from these ALCo variants 52 nos. of WDG4 EMD locos are also in the LKO diesel fleet. Station code - LKO.
