Howrah Station --- Started in 1854, it is the largest, oldest and second busiest station in India. Howrah station is one of the heritage structure which has a predominance of arches with a touch of contemporary British architecture & local trappings. Started with just 5 carriages of only one train Howrah station now is among the largest railway stations in the world caters to all major cities of India, handles over a million passengers a day through 23 platforms & over 350 pairs of trains. This building opened to service in 1905. Initially it had 15 platforms; it was expanded in the 1980s with the addition of 8 platforms in an area to the south of the station which previously had a parcel terminal, bringing the platform count up to 23. At the same time a new Yatri Niwas (transit passenger facility) was built. At present there are 23 platforms in Howrah Station (1-15 for Eastern Railway; 17-23 for South Eastern Railway). The elusive Platform no. 16 is not to be found anywhere. The space in between platforms 15 and 17 has been earmarked for Howrah Metro Station on the East-West Metro Corridor. From within its magnificant archaic structure, huge crowds & olden day charm of this great monument make this a wonderful destination. It became & still remains a gateway to entire eastern & north-eastern India. This station is & always will be the most favorite rail-fanning destination for TT. Station code - HWH.
