Mountain Locomotives - NMR X Class --- Nilgiri Mountain Railway starts from Mettupalayam upto Ooty. The train takes 4 hours to cover a distance of 52 km. It was constructed between 1885 and 1908. Bayer & Peacock Co. of Manchester manufactured the earlier locomotives. They had a rack & pinion system of holding the locos to the track on steep gradient. Later Rack and Adhesion 0-8-2(T) types of steam locomotives were supplied by Swiss Locomotive Works between 1940 and 1952. The stamp depicts 0-8-2T 1914 make X Class steam locomotive still in use. With denomination 800p (₹ 8/-) issued on April 16, 1993.
