Centenary of Railways in Doon Valley --- The railway line between Haridwar & Dehradun was sanctioned on 18th November 1896. This came as much relief to the tourist visiting Mussoorie hill station as they have to face extreme difficulty while travelling by road in bullock carts upto Dehradun & then by dandies & ponies to Mussoorie. The work begun in 1897 & completed by early 1900. The line was opened to traffic on 1st March 1900 with overwhelming response from all sections of the society. To commemorate 100 years of Railways in Doon Valley IndiaPost issused a ₹ 15 stamp on 6th May 2000. The stamp features the B-26 steam locomotive, built in 1870 by Sharp Stewer & Co. Manchester, UK. This broad gauge locomotive was used to haul the first train on Haridwar-Dehradun section of the Oudh & Rohilkhand Railway. The locomotive is now preserved at National Rail Museum, New Delhi.
