It is one of the most beautiful and rare steam locomotive. Built in 1862 by Anjubault in Paris, it was the only locomotive in India with outside Gooch valve gear. Originally 4'-0" gauge with wooden brake blocks, she was named after Shri Ramgotty Mukherjee, the last General Manager of Nalhati Azimganj Light Railway. Designed for Nalhati - Azimganj section in Bengal (1862-63). In 1892 converted to 5'6" gauge by Jamalpur Works for use on East India Railway. The loco became a shunter at Jamalpur until sold to Calcutta Municipal Corporation for refuse hauling in 1951. In its centenary year, Ramgotty was scrapped, but in 1974 it was rescued & returned to Jamalpur & now one of the prime indoor exhibit of National Rail Museum.
