nilgiri mountain railway
NMR-the name synonymous with the mountains of the southern part of the country actually traverses through the slopes and valleys of the Blue Mountains. Opened in 1908, 46 km strectch of NMR or the Nilagiri Mountain Railway has a special place in the history of Indian Railways -- shrouded with mists, enveloped in fog, kissed by tender sunbeams and caressed by low-flying clouds.....it has all the elements of a mystic mountain ride. Traversing on the country's sole operational British-built Rack & Pinion section is reminiscent to time-travelling on a time machine which evokes nostalgia of the by-gone era. Uniqueness is ubiquitous to NMR.......be it for the steepest gradient or being the only mountain railway sojourn in India which has its entire route partly served both by Oil-fired steam locos & the MG diesel locos. Rich tribal culture and bio-diversity adorns the region. The year 2005 has gone down the history of NMR when UNESCO conferred 'World Heritage' status on it. The captivating charm and the pervasive beauty of the floras, waterfalls and the forests enroute cast a spell that spins a web of eternal bliss which yarns a treasure trove of fond memories to rejoice forever....
