NDM6 Class Locomotives

The Loco Story :

Built by Suri and Nayar (SAN) Engineering & Locomotive Co. Bangalore first in 1997.

This class of loco was first used on the Neral-Matheran narrow-gauge route.

New batch of NDM-6 locos working on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

The locos are 2-axle air-braked units and about 17.5 tonnes each with hydraulic transmission.

The engine is a Kirloskar-Cummins engine with 335 hp continuous output.


Technicalities :

Engines --- Kirloskar-Cummins NTA 855L, 6 cylinders

Transmission --- Suri and Nayar Voith hydraulic, model L2r2zU2 with 2-stage reduction in final drive gearbox.

Axle Load --- 17.5 tonnes

Power output --- 335 hp

Bogie type --- 4-wheeled

Max speed --- 30 kmph
