MLR - 738

MLR-738 --- Built in the year 1907 by Orenstein & Koppel AG of Berlin, Germany this is the first locomotive imported for Matheran Light Railway. This 2 ft gauge 0-6-0 locomotive used to serve the Neral-Matheran narrow gauge section of Matheran Light Railway (MLR) until 1982 after which they were phased out. These were probably the only class of locomotives in India to be fitted with articulated Klien-Lindner axles for a flexible wheelbase, which enables the locos to negotiate sharp curves on the steeply graded hill lines of MLR. Currently plinthed outside Neral Narrow-gauge station. Photographed by Somsubhra Das. D.O.P. - 18th January 2019.
