Kolkata Tram - 283 --- An old articulated tramcar with complete wooden interiors was spotted inside Rajabazar depot waiting for its turn to go into oblivion for ever. These cars were fondly called 'Sundari Trams' by CTC workers as these machines used to be the most beautiful amongst the entire CTC fleet since pre-independence era until the new cars started coming in early 80s. These cars were less spacious than 'Elephant cars' fleet of CTC. They have straight front & back ends, with improved high-speed engine, designed to run on express routes, which is why Sundari trams were extensively used in reserved track routes (Express routes) of CTC network in South Kolkata. Later they were introduced into the service at other parts of the network of non-reserved tracks as well. Early cars used to have glass windscreen and dedicated space for Destination rolls at top of the windscreen. The best specimens still left in the system are the two rebuilt Sundari trams # 563 & # 567, used in the hindi movie 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshi'. Later years, during the time of periodical overhauls the destination rolls disappeared. Photographed by Roy on 16th November 2019.
