Kolkata Tram - 250A --- Trams are the main causes of traffic congestion in Kolkata !!! Yes, you heard that right !!! In the wake of this kind of pointless & foolish allegation from the callous & inefficient Traffic Police Department of Kolkata and also for the vested interests of the WB Govt. to boost the auto union leaders, the magnificent & iconic Trams of City of Joy is facing serious identity crisis. Majority of the routes are either truncated for fly-over contructions/collapse and also for the never-ending EW metro corridor (God also don't know when the project will finish). And on top of that, of the few routes which are still operational against all odds, very few of these eco-fiendly mode of transport can be seen in the roads due to police harrasments & non co-operation.
But as most of true Kolkatans and also the tourist from foreign countries still have sympathy for these iconic marvels they can still be seen on roads. And to nullify the increasing pressure from tram users & other environmental organications and also to pacify a possible public outrage govt. planned an eye-wash project of introducing as many as 10 single-coach, modernised, light-weight, fiber-body trams (two ac & eight non-ac) for congested North Kolkata routes in October 2019. These trams were made by dismantling working double-coach trams which only can be treated as public gimmick wastage of tax payers money.
In the picture, a brand new single-coach non-ac tram was waiting to get inaugurated at Esplanade junction. This tram along with # 250B were rebuilt as fiber-body single coach trams at Nonapukur Workshop after dismantling a Burn Standard built tramcar # 250. This tramcar is allotted to Gariahat depot.
