Kolkata Tram - 211 --- A Burn Standard built tramcar arrives near its destination at Rajabazar depot from Howrah Bridge through Acharya Prafulla Chandra road (Upper Circular Road). It was spotted near the famous Victoria College by Roy on 11th February 2014.
There is an interesting fact about Victotria College & Calcutta Trams & the place shown in the above photo. In the year 1946, one night during the infamous riot at Calcutta a group of Muslim rioters, over hundreds in number, planned to attack Victoria Collge & its adjacent women's hostel. Rajabazar Tram Depot workers, majority of them were Muslims, got an early tip about the upcoming attack and immediately planned to save those girls from the rioters. Local people, mostly Muslims as well & majority of them women, from nearby Kolabagan slum also joined hand with the Tram workers. With minimal support of bricks, iron rods & utensils they bravely fought against heavily armed rioters (fight took place at the same loacation shown in the above photo) and saved all the inmates of the women hostel that night. Later British Police team also arrived the scene but by that time rioters have retreated. This incident goes into the pages of the Glorious History of Calcutta Tramways.
