Ahmedpur Katwa Railway was a narrow gauge line, built and operated as part of McLeod's Light Railways. The 53 kilometres (33 miles) long stretch used to connect Ahmedpur and Katwa, built on 760 millimetres (30 inches) track width, was opened to traffic on 29 September 1917. It remained a single track line since its inception till Jan 2013 after which the line gives way to gauge conversion. In 1966 the Indian Railways had taken over the operation of this narrow gauge railway from McLeod & Company. Trains used to take more than four hours to cover the distance. It was the last NG railbus service of Eastern India which is now extinct following the inevitable gauge conversion process.
