Before August 2015, all WR EMUs with the modern Alternating Current 3-phase IGBT transmission technology have been powered either by Siemens or Bombardier. Then came the new rakes - whose electrical systems are completely indigenous, powered by Hyderabad-based firm Medha Servo Drives - thus commonly known as the 'Medha' rakes. This marked the beginning of an era of indigenous production of Indian-made electrical traction motors and train control mechanisms. The manufacturing cost of these rakes is also said to be lower because of this reason. Gradually the Medha rakes have been inducted into active services by all zones having dense commuter train operations like CR, ER, SER, NR, SR & SCR.
