Most of the EMUs of CR used to run on 1500 V DC. These rolling stocks were built by Jessop and Co Limited, Calcutta mostly in 1984 with Traction Motors Control equipments and other electrical equipments manufactured by Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL). These trains are generally made of three units or four units. Each unit can be worked as an Independent train. But all the 3 or 4 unit are electrically and mechanically coupled to each other and operated from one place i.e. either of the end coaches. Hence these rake of 9 cars or 12 cars are called the Electrical Multiple Unit. Each single unit consists of 3 coaches named C Coach - Driving tailor coach or Modified Non driving, B Coach - Motor coach and A coach - Non-driving trailor coach. 'C' coaches have the equipments for remote control operation of the train. 'B' coaches or the motor coaches are equipped with 4 Traction Motors, a pantograph on the roof to collect the HT supply from OHE for motors, motor generator and compressor. A separate compartment in motor coach is provided with resistance pneumatic control (RPC) equipments for the operation of Traction Motor. These are called as RPC compartment. 'A' coaches or trailer non-driving coaches are exclusively for passengers. Half of these trailer coaches are for 1st class passengers.
