WG-8407 'Desh Bandhu' --- The WG class was the most common broad-gauge freight locomotive in post-independence India. Initially a total of 542 WG class locos were imported within a span of six years starting from 1950. Post 1956, full scale indegenous production started which satisfied the demand. Though the production of steam locomotives of independent India originated on 26th January 1950 itself and within a short period of less than ten months the first steam loco was dedicated to the service of the nation on 1st November 1950. It was christened as 'Deshbandhu' in remembrance of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das - the great patriot & freedom fighter. This locomotive was allotted with road number 8401.
