Kolkata gets wings - wings to connect the IT hub of the City of Joy with Howrah - the twin city. It took decades for Kolkata to get its second metro link in the form of the East-West Metro Corridor (KMRCL) and finally the D-Day arrives when the East-West Metro kicked off today amid much fanfare. It was only beginning of a special journey today which will span across the city’s IT Hub and take the plunge under the Ganges to reach Howrah via Sealdah.
Inauguration of Phase-I ensured operation from Salt Lake Sector-V to Salt Lake Stadium covering a distance of 4.88 Km. The EW Metro corridor has some unique features which includes Platform Screen Doors for preventing accidental/intentional fall on the tracks. All the BEML made rakes are also equipped with regenerative braking and state of the art design and comfort. The sliding doors of the rake also has obstruction detection system so that no passenger gets hurt even if he gets stuck between the doors. Commercial service of the world’s cheapest metro commences from 14th February 2020 with an operational distance of six stations which includes Karunamoyee, Central Park, City Center & Bengal Chemical.
